Dr. Sindhu Koshy, cardiologist at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, says this study may help physicians and patients to be more open minded to being on higher intensity statins. “I think we have known that statins are they key to preventing and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study shows us that pushing for higher intensity therapy can reduce mortality and further reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.”
Dr. Koshy says those at the highest risk of future cardiovascular events should consider a higher dose of statins based on need and lipid goals. She says in addition statin medications, patients also need to follow a heart smart diet and exercise program to reduce their risk.
